The 10 Best Movie Titles that Make You Want to Watch Them!
Filed under: Classic Movies, Drama, Editorial, Horror, Sci-fi & Fantasy
Sometimes I see a movie title that sounds so daft, or cool, or something that it just makes me want to check out the film even though commonsense suggests it’s bound to be rubbish. Latest such for me is I Know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer (though I’ve yet to get it).
Here’s my countdown to the great titles I have actually seen so far:
- 10 ) Chopper Chicks from Zombie Town (1989) — This is one of the many films that have led me to equate “Troma” (the production company it escaped from) with “Great title, but deeply disappointing, dull, boring, just plain awful, to be avoided at all costs” B-movie. Unfortunately, I’ve also blotted it out of my mind so I can’t actually comment on the plot. According to Rob Hartnell on IMDB it’s about “a gang of tough women bikers are the only thing that stands between a crowd of Zombies….and those still alive in the town“, and according to a quote on the cover it’s “Funny”. Maybe it is. Maybe I was just in a bad mood when I watched it. I don’t remember, but I’ve only ever seen one Troma title I liked, so I’m in no hurry to ever watch it again to double-check. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem to be available anymore so I won’t have to.
- 9 ) Over-sexed Rugsuckers from Mars (1989) — It’s years since I watched this but I remember it was less of a B-movie than the tacky VHS artwork suggested and more like something you may have found on Channel 4, around 10 o’clock at night. Worth watching, but only seems to be available on US Region 1 DVD for around £6.91 from DVDMagnet.com (which has an even more garish cover, also best ignored).
- 8 ) Shriek, if you know what I did last Friday the 13th (2000) — Obviously a parody of the teen slasher film genre, in the Scary Movie vein (but not as good as it doesn’t have Anna Faris in it), but perfectly watchable anyways (if it was still available on DVD, which it doesn’t seem to be).
- 7 ) Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot! (1992) — Mainstream movie where Stallone plays a cop whose elderly mother turns up for a visit and starts interfering in his life and police work. Needlesstosay, with the late Golden Girl, Estelle Getty cast as the mother, the comedy works very well and it makes for a very enjoyable film. Available from Zavvi and The Hut online for £3.85 UK delivered.
- 6 ) Throw Momma from the Train (1987) — When college tutor, Larry (Billy Crystal), suggests to one of his students, Owen (Danny DeVito), watches Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train” to understand how suspense works, he misunderstands the situation and thinks the tutor wants him to emulate the movie by killing the tutor’s hated ex-wife and in exchange the tutor will kill Owen’s domineering mother. Another mainstream movie that lives up to its great title. Available for £3.85 from Zavvi and The Hut.
- 5 ) Rabid Grannies (1988) — From IMDB: “When a mysterious package is opened at dinner the two old birthday hags turn into rabid demons and start killing the guests.“. Sadly, I can’t remember much about this film, though I’m sure I saw it back in the days when Video World rented out 7 films for 7 days for £5. The title did make me want to watch it though. Only seems to be available in Region 1 land — £4.83 delivered from DVDMagnet.com.
- 4 ) Zombie Strippers (2008) — The title alone is difficult to resist but add in Robert “Nightmare on Elm Street” Englund and it’s nigh on impossible! A bunch of strippers turn into zombies, as they do, and start eating the audience. Gory, but funny too, and much better than it has any business being. Can be bought on DVD for just £2.87 from Base.com or on blu-ray for £7.99 from Shopto.net
- 3 ) Slave Girls from Beyond Infinity (1987) — You can almost hear the cinema announcer blasting out the title in classic 1950′s style. Often described as a “Sex Comedy” as it has its funny moments and the two busty lead actresses spend much of the movie dressed only in skimpy two-piece bikinis, but basically it’s a sci-fi retelling of “The Hounds of Zaroff” (1932), with androids instead of hounds, and laser weapons for guns. Sadly, it only seems to be available as a Region 1 DVD, so you would need a multi-region DVD player and NTSC capable TV (though, if your equipment is fairly modern, that shouldn’t be a problem) and read our page about Importing DVDs too. Cheapest price according to find-dvd’s Region 1 search is £4.84 from DVDMagnet.com (including delivery).
- 2 ) I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle (1990) — Truly a modern classic! Starring cast members from the TV series, Boon, it tells the story of Noddy, who buys a old Norton Commando motorcycle which turns out to be possessed, and wanders the streets at night under its own power, in search of blood. Loved the way it plays with vampire lore, and the supporting roles of priest and policeman are comic masterpieces. Happilly, still available on DVD — £7.99 from Play (though judging by the small number of places selling it on find-dvd, it may be going out of print).
- 1 ) Chopping Mall “Where shopping can cost you an arm and a leg” (1986) — Admittedly, the tagline is catchier than the title and, in true B-movie tradition, bears little relationship to the contents of the film (as there’s not an axe in sight!). When a group of teenagers decide to sneak into a shopping mall after closing, they reckon without the new experimental security robots, who promptly malfunction and go on a killing spree. Can any of the teens survive the night? Look out for Dick Miller, as the caretaker — no B-Movie is really complete without him. A budget release is still available (£3.30 from SelectCheaper or £3.37 from Base.com) and a re-release seems to be up for preorder on HMV, priced £5.99 (£9.99 elsewhere). Don’t know if this re-release is going to contain a commentary, like the Region 1 release has.
Amongst those not included because I haven’t yet seen them are the wonderful sounding Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009), The Ghosts in the Invisible Bikini (1966), Fat Guy Goes Nutzoid (1986) — another Troma film so it’s almost certainly awful, and Zombie Women Of Satan (2009).
